Where Do Our Priorities Lie?

Right now all I see on social media, mainstream media and hear about in conversations is the recent death of a young rapper from Chicago. While this in itself is sad, what I find more sad is the fact that we have lost focus on what matters, things that we can change.

I am not heartless, as I am the mother of three young adults. I am just finding it hard to want to go out in the cold and hold a vigil for a young man that seemingly did not value his own life, while the many missing women and children barely receive honorable mentions. Everyday someone posts about a missing woman and/or child.

We can do something about this. We can be more vigilant in our communities. If you see a woman or child at the bus stop, especially alone, wait for the bus with them. You don’t even have to let them know you are doing it. Pay attention to your surroundings, do not walk around with headphones on. If possible do not travel alone. Always inform someone as to your whereabouts and with who.

I guess in summing up this post, what I’m saying is to make the living a priority. Save the lives that you can. We should not have to mourn another woman or child due to trafficking or senseless murder. We can make us a priority and help someone live another day.

I wish you peace.
